From the Oval Office.
Franklin Delano Roosevelt was elected as The 32nd President of the United States of America in 1933. Mr. Roosevelt was a cripple. With his legs fastened tightly against heavy iron braces and a fist grasped tightly around a cane Mr. Roosevelt stood tall and forced his body to walk. He gave speeches upright, often supported by one of his sons. In public Mr. Roosevelt was careful never to be seen in a wheelchair. Mr. Roosevelt indeed must have clenched his teeth in pain lest he appear weak and vulnerable to his fellow Americans and a world ill at ease.
The nation's media had a silent understanding that to photograph our nation's leader in a moment of weakness was not done. He was the President and our nation understood to make a point of his physical weakness would be a great disservice to our nation.

Is it a disservice to our nation to call FDR a communist that took advantage of America's economic (and resulting emotional) weakness to abuse the power of his office?
Nope.
